Temporary Warming Center on Tuesdays and Fridays through April 28, 2022 -- 9:00am to 5:00pm weekly

CCO, Durango Christian and Durango Vineyard Churches have agreed to initiating a temporary warming center beginning 11/8/2022 and 11/11/2022. The church Fellowship Hall is reserved for people experiencing homelessness in Durango, Colorado.

Manna Soup Kitchen will provide box lunches. CCO will provide snacks and water. Other agencies will have the opportunity to meet clients in CCO's office.

Volunteers and CCO's Peer Support Professionals will provide Warming Center Guests with trauma-informed care, with the purpose of connecting individuals/families to resources.

Community Compassion Outreach's mission is to assist local individuals and families in preventing, surviving, and exiting homelessness and poverty. This program provides recovery coaches, peer support professionals, and culturally sensitive assistance which includes meals, housing assistance, motel nights, transportation, wraparound services, and referrals to partner agencies who provide coordination of care. Funding will also be used to facilitate a new child/family program with free transportation in our new 12-passenger van (families with children only).

Peer recovery support for people suffering mental conditions and/or substance use disorders is a
new service offered by volunteers and paid peer & family specialists/recovery coaches.

CCO became a nonprofit on March 29, 2018. The IRS determination letter dated August 2018 recognizes Community Compassion Outreach (CCO) as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Community Compassion Outreach is made up of concerned individuals, faith & nonprofit groups, and local/state/national organizations working together to craft permanent & real solutions to end homelessness.

HUD Balance of State, 2017 Homeless Point-in-Time Survey in La Plata County indicates 91 homeless with 35 unsheltered.
  • ​66/91 were households (count is seriously lower than actual)
  • 73% were ages over 24
  • 45% were victims of domestic violence
  • These numbers do not account for couch-surfers, people hiding in difficult to reach spaces, those sleeping in vehicles, etcetera.
April 2018, according to law enforcement, there were 38 campsites with 50 homeless persons
  • ​An additional 20 more campsites were dispersed in the woods and other uninhabitable spaces
  • Housing Solutions for the Southwest assessed 69 individuals for housing, with 10 placed across three counties (not including La Plata County) — leaving 59 persons on the wait-list

CCO's Three-Point Commitment

Advancing self-sufficiency and human dignity
CCO is committed to fostering personal responsibility, independence, self-governance, and the life skills necessary for people to move out of unstable living situations and into brighter futures.

Safe, stable small homes in a village setting
Homes provided through CCO will be compact, safe, durable and functional. Residents will be involved in the operation and maintenance of the community with oversight and support provided by CCO.

For those who need them most
CCO will serve those with very low incomes that are currently unable to access affordable housing.

Proposed Components 

HHI Essential Homes - 560/704/1408-sq.ft. options with shared resources and common facility to support a village with one, two, three and four bedroom units for more than 60 homeless households. 

Recovery Sober-Living Housing is a new priority for CCO's Recovery Empowerment Support Services Team (RESST) Phase Two Program.


SELF-GOVERNANCE - Involvement of residents in decision-making and management.

VILLAGE MEETING - Residents meet as a community at least twice a week, based upon evidence-based policy.​

COMMUNITY AGREEMENT - A basic code of conduct by which residents would abide.

Our mission is to assist individuals & families to prevent, to survive and to exit homelessness with warm clothing, camp provisions, food, referrals to vital resources and connection to housing. We designed a small 560-sq.ft. Essential House for permanent and supportive housing in a Village of Hope development.
